IG Solutions

In situations where lamination is not desired, IG units can be configured in ways to mitigate exterior noise and improve interior peace and quiet. Some dual-glazed IG units offer a measure of sound reduction over monolithic glass, and triple-glazed can provide additional measures over dual. Factors such as glass thickness, varying glass thicknesses in the individual panes (e.g., 3 mm on the outside, 2.3 mm on the inside), and changing the spacing between the panes also impact sound.

Reducing sound transmission through windows and doors is a function of component materials, system design, installation, and understanding of the basic physics of sound. The industry standard rating systems for sound.

The Sound Transmission Class (STC) and Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class (OITC) are two standard ratings systems used to measure the effectiveness of sound insulation. Both give you a relative scale in which to evaluate sound mitigation: the higher the number, the higher the sound transmission loss or noise reduction.

• STC: Measures sound mitigation of mid- or high-frequency noises that are typically found indoors, such as speech, radio or television noise or household appliances.
• OITC: Measures sound mitigation of lower-frequency noises generated from outside sources, such as traffic, airport and industrial activity.
